Discovery Boxes


Discovery Boxes are a free educational resource offered to local schools and groups, designed to give students more hands-on opportunities.
   Back to Education  Each discovery box is packed full of interesting, hard to obtain items that can further stimulate learning in a classroom setting.  Currently we have nine Discovery Boxes available for loan:

 

Animal Signs:  An assortment of items that give clues as to what kinds of animals might reside in an area.   Examples: bones, tracks, feathers, nests, egg shells... 
Birds: Bird related books, videos and items. Examples: feathers, nests, bones, owl pellets..... 
Mammals: Mammal related books, videos and items. Examples: skulls, pelts, tracks...
Reptiles:  Reptile related books, videos and items. Examples: turtle shells, snake egg shell, alligator cast, snake skins... 
Endangered Species:  Items dealing with endangered species.  Examples: numerous items confiscated by Conservation Officers like turtle skin boots, ivory carvings, elephant hair bracelets...
Insects:  Books, videos, and items related to a smaller world.  Examples: hornets nest, insect eggs, moths racoon, insect collection..... 
Native Americans:  Two boxes of books and other items portraying the lives of Native Americans.  Examples: pottery reproductions, clay gorgets and beads, stone tools..... 
Trees:  Items, books and videos about trees.  Examples: 'tree rings', leaves, assortment of fruit and nuts for tree identification... 
Historical Turn-of-the-Century Life:  Look back in time with a box full of items (mostly reproductions) from the turn-of-the-century.  Examples:  children's toys, clothing items, candle sticks, washboard..... 

Boxes are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and must be picked up in person... no delivery available.  Boxes can be checked out for up to two weeks, and there is a refundable $20 damage deposit.  We're sorry, we cannot reserve a box over the phone.
