Nature Learning Labs

Biology books are wonderful, but to see what nature is really all about, you have to get outside and touch it.  With 100 acres available, including wetlands, forest, open fields, and even the stars, Landmark Park offers students a wide variety of experiences to complement any course of study.

INCREDIBLE INSECTS

In this program, students will be introduced to the identifying characteristics of insects.  Stereoscopes will be utilized to take a closer look at these incredible animals and we will have an insect scavenger hunt around the boardwalk to observe insects in their natural habitat.

Suggested Grade Level: K5-6th

ANIMAL ARCHITECTURE

While walking our boardwalk and nature trail we will examine rotting logs, burrows, cavities, different types of nests and make comparisons between these homes and our own.  The changing of seasons and the related changes among plants and animals will also be discussed.

Suggested Grade Level: K5-6th

UNHUGGABLES

Yuk! Icky! Gross!...These are the usual comments heard from those viewing the unloved members of the Animal Kingdom.  In this program we will take a closer look at many of the misunderstood animals that have a bad reputation, which they usually don't deserve!  A combination of slides and live animals will highlight this indoor presentation on bats, insects, spiders, snakes, etc...

Suggested Grade Level: 2nd-12th

WHAT'S WILD?  WHAT'S NOT?

During this program there will be an opportunity to see farm animals up close and explore their benefits while discussing the characteristics of domestication.  Then we move on to the WILD side of the animal kingdom.  We will go into the classroom to learn the interesting habits of the beaver and finish the program by "building" a beaver using student participation.

Suggested Grade Level: 3P-2nd

WETLANDS

The wetland program, designed specifically for middle and high school students, offers a unique learning experience perfect for older more adventurous groups willing to roll up their sleeves and get a little wet and muddy.  Students will conduct activities to understand how streams and ponds form, what habitats they contain, how freshwater organisms adapt, and how factors such as pH affect these environments.  They then apply what they have learned by exploring as actual nearby freshwater habitat.  Due to the special nature of this lab, space is limited to one class (20 students) per session.

Suggested Grade Level: 6th -12th

VALUABLE VERTEBRATES

Animals with backbones are the focus of this program.  Students will learn the characteristics separating mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish.  Activities in our classroom will be reinforced with a vertebrate search on the boardwalk.

Suggested Grade Level: 2nd-12th

RADICAL REPTILES

Discover the importance of such animals as snakes and alligators in this popular program.  The distinguishing characteristics of reptiles will be investigated in detail.  Many items relating to reptiles will be examined along with the opportunity to touch a live snake and turtle.

Suggested Grade Level: 2nd-12th

STARLAB PLANETARIUM

While in the planetarium we will discuss planets that are visible, stars and the constellations they form, along with some of the myths associated with them.  Our planetarium will be set to view the night sky during the time of your visit.  A mapping activity may be included.  Program length: 45 minutes.  Planetarium capacity is 45.

Suggested Grade Level: K5-12th

Planetarium Program is $3 per student
