Alabama State Horse and Mule Plowing Contest



 

All horses/mules must have Negative Coggins Test and Health papers within six months of contest.

Each contestant will have one person to help with the horses/mules. But that person can not adjust the plow in the contest.

For walking plows the plot size will be 25 feet wide and 125 feet long. For sulky plows the plot size will be 25 feet wide and 150 feet long.

Contestants will throw up a headland and plow at least 2 rounds around the headland, leaving an open furrow on one side as close to the side of the plot as possible. Then throw the land out on the other side of the plot, plowing the rest of the land until they leave a dead furrow. DO NOT plow furrow back in.

Dept of plowing: 12" plow - ½ width of moldboard - 6"

14" plow - ½ width of moldboard - 7"

16" plow - ½ width of moldboard - 8"

Walking Plow 2 Horses/ Mules

1st Place - $100, 2nd. Place - $50, 3rd.- $25

 

Sulky Plow 2 Horses/ Mules

1st Place - $100, 2nd. Place - $50, 3rd.- $25

 

POINTS OF JUDGING

Contest will be judged on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being excellent and 1 being poor.

1. Depth of furrow - for moldboard being used

2. Straightness of furrow

3. Headland

4. Levelness of bottom of furrow

5. Vertical and Cleanliness of sidewall of furrow

6. Throwing out of land

7. Straightness of ends

8. Cleanliness of ends

9. Closeness of 25' wide on each end and center of 125' long for walking plow. The same for sulky only 150' long.
